Title: somewhere to rest your weary head
Pairing: Daniel/Charlotte/Miles (kind of)
Rating: PG-13
Words: 1,070
Disclaimer: Not mine.
Summary: Time traveling is exhausting. AU season five.
A/N: Written for former Queen [livejournal.com profile] valhalla37 who asked for tropes at the [livejournal.com profile] lostsquee luau. This is kind of hurt/comfort, kind of forced to share a bed, definite fluff. I hope it’s to her former majesty's liking. ;)

The flash comes and Dan pulls Charlotte to his chest, whispers stay with me over and over, all the while clinging to the fact that he can still feel her breath, shallow but steady, against his neck.

The pressure is almost unbearable, it feels like the world is being ripped apart around him and he knows Charlotte can’t take much more of this. It stops as suddenly as it began. Dan blinks slowly, runs his trembling hands through Charlotte’s hair.

“Charlotte?”

She whimpers in response. It’s not much. But it’s something.

“You’re still here,” Dan murmurs through his tears.

*

The others find him kneeling beside her and Juliet gently pushes him away so she can examine Charlotte.

“She needs a doctor,” Juliet says grimly. “She’s lost a lot of blood.”

“Hate to break it to you, Blondie, but we don’t even know when the hell we are and even if we did, I don’t think the island’s ever had an ER.”

Juliet glares at Sawyer until he looks properly chastised. Daniel ignores them both and returns to hovering nervously by Charlotte’s side.

“Is there anything you can do?” he asks.

Juliet squeezes his hand.

“Out here? No. But if we can find the medical station…”

“Then you can help her.”

“You guys know how much I love tramping through the jungle, but what if there is no medical station yet?” Miles asks.

“We’re just going to have to hope that there is,” Juliet says.

“Watch yourself, Mr. Wizard,” Sawyer says as he steps around Daniel and scoops Charlotte up in one easy motion. “Lead the way, Blondie.”

*

They never make it to the Medical Station. They find something even better in the form of a scared Dharma member named Amy.

Daniel notes that Juliet looks less than pleased to be back in the Dharma barracks, but as far as he’s concerned it’s a blessing. They have a doctor and medical supplies and clean beds, everything Charlotte needs to get better.

He waits anxiously on the steps outside of the medical building with Miles by his side. Miles yawns and Daniel feels a sudden surge of gratitude. He knows his friend would rather be back with the others settling in for the night, but he’s still here, keeping Daniel from fretting as much as he possibly can.

“It’s fucking 1973, man. When did our lives get so weird?”

Daniel laughs before he can stop himself.

“Our lives have always been weird, Miles.”

“That’s very true. For me at least.”

The doctor opens the door and sticks his head out.

“You can come in now.”

Daniel scrambles to his feet.

“Is she…”

“She’s going to be fine. She’ll need a lot of rest for the next few days, but that’s to be
expected. I still don’t understand what triggered such severe migraines, but whatever it was it seems to have passed.”

“Can we see her?” Daniel asks.

The doctor nods.

“But just for a few minutes. She needs a good night’s sleep.”

“You go ahead, buddy. I’m going to go before all of the good patches of floor are taken,” Miles says.

Daniel smiles and awkwardly pats Miles on the shoulder.

“Thank you, Miles.”

Miles shrugs him off.

“Just go check on your girlfriend.”

*

Charlotte looks small curled in the hospital bed; her skin is almost as pale as the crisp, white sheets pulled up to her chin, but at least there’s no more blood crusted on her face.

“Hey,” she says sleepily.

Daniel hesitates, his hand fluttering indecisively next to hers. He’s almost afraid to touch her. Charlotte makes up his mind for him by catching his hand and twining their fingers together. Daniel feels tears stinging his eyes as he sinks down beside her.

“Charlotte…I…I thought…”

“Shhh,” she shushes him. “I’m going to be fine.”

Daniel presses a kiss to her knuckles and rests his head on their clasped hands. He’s so tired.
He hadn’t realized before, but now that the adrenaline and worry are slowly ebbing away, exhaustion is taking their place.

Charlotte shifts over slightly and pats the bed.

“Come on,” she says.

Dan shakes his head.

“No, the doctor…”

“Can stuff it. Hop in, it’s not like you’ve got anywhere else to sleep, yeah?”

Daniel smiles. He knows the others are sleeping on couches and floors tonight. He wouldn’t mind, but a bed would be preferable, especially a bed that Charlotte was in.

“You don’t have to let me stay here,” Daniel says. “There’s room with the others. Or I could stay in the chair.”

“I don’t want to be alone tonight, Dan,” Charlotte says quietly.

Daniel doesn’t say anything else; he just crawls in beside her, carefully avoiding her IV wires. He slips an arm around her shoulder and Charlotte leans into him gratefully.

“That’s better,” she says.

Daniel kisses the top of her forehead, his eyes already drifting shut. He can feel her breath, steady and warm, tickling his neck.

“Much, much better.”

*

Miles finds them early the next morning, still curled around each other. Daniel blinks sleepily up at Miles’s smirking face.

“Figures, I spend the night on the floor listening to Sawyer snoring while you’re here playing the late-night Cinemax version of Florence Nightingale.”

Daniel knows he’s blushing. He shrugs sheepishly and Charlotte stirs beside him.

“Shut up, Miles,” she mutters into Daniel’s shirt.

Miles rolls his eyes.

“Glad to see you’re feeling like your old, annoying self again.”

Charlotte leans her head against Daniel’s chest and winks at Miles.

“You were worried.”

Miles shakes his head.

“Whatever.”

“He was,” Daniel says. “We all were.”

Miles yawns and squeezes in beside them.

“If I agree to that, can I stay here for awhile? That floor was a fucking nightmare.”

Charlotte wiggles closer to Daniel to make more room and Daniel tries not to think of what the doctor will say when he comes in.

“Guys, this looks a little strange, don’t you think?” Dan asks.

“It’s the ‘70s Dan, and we’re in a hippie compound---this is normal,” Miles says.

Charlotte laughs, she already sounds stronger, more like her old self.

“You don’t mind?” he asks Charlotte.

She shakes her head.

“It’s kind of nice.”

“Yeah, yeah, it’s peachy. Can we sleep now?” Miles moans.

Daniel turns on his side and wraps an arm around Charlotte’s waist. She fits against him perfectly.

“That sounds like a wonderful idea to me,” Daniel says.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Like always, I'm running waaaay too short on time, but just wanted to say that this made my day, I've already read it about ten thousand times, and I'll be back with a more coherant comment ASAP. ;D

Okay, I'm finally back -- and yikes, sorry for the delay! -- and I just hope I'm able to explain to you just how much I ADORE this to pieces, because it's like getting a warm, fuzzy hug, but of Charlotte/Daniel/Miles goodness. It's adorable without being silly or saccharine or cringe-inducing, and I've seriously read it about 10 times because it's just that good and it makes my day every time I go back to reread.

The flash comes and Dan pulls Charlotte to his chest, whispers stay with me over and over, all the while clinging to the fact that he can still feel her breath, shallow but steady, against his neck.

THIS. This is the scene I feel like I've always tried to write -- it's so painful and visceral, and I loooooooooooooooooooove a million times over that you echo it again near the end, with the Daniel kisses the top of her forehead, his eyes already drifting shut. He can feel her breath, steady and warm, tickling his neck. PERFECTION.

And I love the Juliet/Sawyer appearance -- such an awesome little moment -- and then that Miles keeps watch with Dan outside the hospital room. Something about this line especially -- “You go ahead, buddy. I’m going to go before all of the good patches of floor are taken,” Miles says. -- seriously made me crack it, probably because it's so completely Miles. And oh my god, you've got Dan's mannerisms down like whoa; in every single moment I could picture him and his nervous, fluttery movements to a T.

And then Charlotte! Who's so Charlotte, and another trope I adore but didn't mention is "nursing back to health" so this clearly hit that kink super hardcore too, which was amazing. Like this whole thing: “Hey,” she says sleepily.

Daniel hesitates, his hand fluttering indecisively next to hers. He’s almost afraid to touch her. Charlotte makes up his mind for him by catching his hand and twining their fingers together. Daniel feels tears stinging his eyes as he sinks down beside her.

AHHHHHHHHHHHH. Perfection, amazing, etc. Probably one of the passages I loved most, because again it's such incredible imagery, and it says so much in so little. And the crawling into bed with her! *dies* And the ending where all three of them cuddle and rest and actually get a moment of peace together! *dies more* Seriously, I would have exploded of squee if anything even remotely like this happened on the show but this fic is pretty much the best thing ever beyond that. Thank you SO, SO much for writing it -- it's amazing! :D

Yay! Thank you so much. I'm so, so glad you enjoyed this! I'm was worried it was too way fluffy, but the angst was just not working for me for some reason.

You know the more I read/write AU s5 fics the more irritated I become that they didn't save Charlotte. It would have been so easy! And think of the cuddling and smoochies. S6 would have been a lot more fun with all the freighties around.

Guh, I adore this scene so much. This whole fic, actually, which is MILES better (heh) than the canon version where they actually save the Korean-speaking archaeologist who finds polar bears in deserts. But the hippie compound ;)

Heh. Thank you so much! If those lazy physicists ever get around to inventing a proper time machine we're totally going back to "help" Darlton see the error of their ways. Charlotte was too cool to be disposed of so quickly.
