He was good at science. Gifted, they said. He could have changed the world.

That’s not how he saw it though. He was sixteen and for him it just provided the kids in his class with another excuse to shove him into his locker.

Science didn’t mean anything to him, so he gave it up.

He wasn’t a faithful man either. He couldn’t imagine that any god could take so much from someone with so little.

But then he found himself standing on an island watching flames engulf the chair that had been his prison for four years.

He was standing.

And that was reason enough to believe.

WOW! Such powerful imagery and such a great sense of language in this -- love the parallels between John giving up on science and him giving up on faith, and how he finds his way back to believing. Fantastic!

Thank you so much! I never thought I would write a Locke fic (even a short one) but I actually really enjoyed writing him.

This is completely in-character and perfect. I loved this. John is such a tragic character.

Thank you so much! And I know John, even if he does frustrate me sometimes, always breaks my heart.

You know, as much as I hate John (I know! I really am mean sometimes.), this was truly excellent. I will never master the art of the drabble, and I am seriously jealous of the way you use it to capture the essence of his character so succinctly here. Amazing.

Thank you so much!

Heh. I have hated John on occasion myself, but somehow he always wins me back in the end.

I have such a hard time writing drabbles. I'm wordy by nature, so giving myself a limit is like torture sometimes. ;)
