They left just once.

I need to know I can, she said.

So they did. Got on the sub, took it to the main land, ate food from street vendors, danced under the stars to an unfamiliar tune.

At night they slept in a hotel room bed and marveled at the novelty. She kept one of the tiny, complimentary soaps, slipped it into her pocket.

Souvenir, she said with a wink.

He got a souvenir too. A ring, purchased when he was sure she wasn’t looking, tucked it away for a later that would never come.

We could stay, she said.

Maybe one day.

They never went back.
