This is the least ragey I’ve been post-Emmys in years. Did everyone I want to win, win this year? No, but for once it didn’t matter so much. There was a proper host (my god NPH, you make me want to be a gay man just so I could pretend to have a shot with you), no one was forced to cut their speech short, and you know it was for the most part fun to watch. Thoughts under the cut.
*Highlight of the night: Kristen Chenoweth wins best supporting actress. Suck it ABC. You can cancel my happy pie show and banish its final episodes to the Saturday night deathslot but damnit you can not keep Olive Snook down. Yeah, I cried. A lot.
*Highlight #2: Michael Emerson. That guy is such a class act and it was so nice to see someone from Lost on that stage. And although I’m still a bit bitter that Davies didn’t get a nod, I can’t complain about Emerson winning because the man is a brilliant performer. You know I don’t talk about Ben much or write fic about him, but it’s not because the character doesn’t interest me. It’s that Ben is the one character I’m completely happy to just watch unfold onscreen and that’s thanks to Emerson’s incredible work.
* Dr. Horrible interlude! Joss Whedon I am so proud of you. You guys saw his speech at the creative Emmys right? My journal title /subtitle have been changed in his honor.
* Have I mentioned how awesome NPH was? My favorite bit had to be the post-win interview with Jon Cryer. It should have been Neil ---or McBrayer (I have to support my fellow Georgians)! But damn that man can lose with style.
* MAD MEN. Enough said.
* I thought 30 Rock was wildly uneven this year, but I loved Tina Fey’s acceptance speech. “I’d like to thank NBC for keeping us on the air even though we are more expensive than a talk show.”
* Things that sucked: Jim Parsons should have won best actor. Elisabeth Moss should have won best actress and I’m sure Breaking Bad is a very good show, but Michael C. Hall needs to win one of these days. Emmy voters, if you keep ignoring Dexter you’re going to meet his dark passenger and trust me he’s not so nice.
* Ricky Gervais and Jimmy Fallon were hilarious. Bob Newhart not so much.
* Please stop letting people sing during the in memoriam. It’s distracting.
* You had to show the well scene? Seriously? I did not need to randomly burst into tears during the drama montage CBS.
I also watched Mad Men last night. My non-spoilery reaction: I really want Lost to win best drama next year because it’s the last year and I love the show more than air, but if Mad Men keeps this up Lost is screwed. Seriously, the Mad Men folks can’t even produce a mediocre episode let alone a bad one. It’s almost not fair.
Secondly, I know this sounds a little crazy given the caliber of actor on Mad Men but am I the only one who thinks the little girl playing Sally Draper stands a real chance at getting a best supporting actress nod next year? She’s been more than holding her on this season; she’s actually stealing every scene she’s in and breaking my heart in the process.
Oh Emmys, you just ended and I’m already thinking about next year.

Date: 9/21/09 06:54 pm (UTC)I loathe Two and Half Men. It's so crass and I've never been able to make it through more than a few minutes without cringing. I would have been happy with any of the other guys winning, but I kind of hate seeing such a crappy show rewarded.
I wasn't a big fan of "Dead is Dead", but at this point I think Emerson could sell me on anything. He makes even the most ridiculous material seem brilliant.
I'm with you on Moss. Peggy's my favorite Mad Men character and Moss is just so good. I really wanted to see her win this year.

Date: 9/21/09 03:56 pm (UTC)There were a couple wins that made me a little sad, though mostly not because actors were deserving -- i.e.: Bryan Cranston -- just that it would have been nice for the voters to spread around the wealth and not keep giving awards to the same people. NPH was incredible, though I feel bad he lost to someone from Two and a Half Men, of all things. Ricky Gervais was wicked too. Wish Lost had gotten a couple more (though ME's win was awesome); on the other hand, I think they were mostly nominated for The Incident and that is just wrong. Really I just wanted to see everyone up on stage together, although I don't think many of the cast came out in the first place.

Date: 9/21/09 07:02 pm (UTC)I really wish they hadn't submitted "The Incident". I love Lost, but that episode was not the finest example of what the show can do by a longshot. "Jughead", "This Place is Death", "La Fleur", "The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham"...anything else would have been better.
I hope we get to see them all take the stage next year though. Man, I'm already getting weepy thinking about it.

Date: 9/21/09 06:30 pm (UTC)I was FURIOUS that MacBrayer and Niel didn't win. Two and a Half Men?!?!?!?! Furious. And I totally agree with Valhalla. Lost being up for The Incident is ridiculous. It wasn't very good. There were a bunch of great and well-written episodes this season. The season premiere, The Little Prince, lots of stuff. I think it'll win next year. I remember The Lord of the Rings didn't win hardly anything the first two years, and then it cleaned up in the year when the last movie was eligible, and it clearly represented the entire body of work.
Niel Patrick Harris is a god. And yes, this was the best awards show I've watched in a really long time.
Regarding Mad Men, Joan is amazing. :)

Date: 9/21/09 07:11 pm (UTC)Hopefully next year Darlton will make better choices when it comes time to submit episodes for consideration. The only thing "The Incident" had going for it was the Holloway/Mitchell performances and it took too many leaps in logic to get there.
I really want them to win next year. It would book end the series since they won way back in season one. Plus, I really want to see the show on the whole rewarded because aside from the occasional misstep I honestly believe Lost is one of the best shows ever to grace the small screen. It's gutsy, original, moving and often down-right brilliant. *Weeps* I don't want it to be over...
