A/N: Written for [livejournal.com profile] ciaimpala who requested Jack/Sawyer + “The Jeopardy Room.” I’m sad to say this bears little resemblance to the The Twilight Zone ep, but I hope you like it anyway. Happy Halloween! <3

The cabin still stands in the jungle. Unseen but to those who wish to see it. It creeks at the slightest breeze, moans as if it has forgotten that it’s a phantom and no longer needs to breath. Inside a man sits alone in the rocking chair with his hands folded in his lap, his eyes trained on the door waiting for his visitor to arrive.

Sawyer squints up at the sky and wishes the moon was full so he wouldn’t have to worry about breaking his neck as he stumbles through the trees. A bottle hangs loosely in his hand, its amber liquid sloshing temptingly, begging him to stop for a drink.

He considers it as he stubs his toe on another root protruding awkwardly from the earth. It would sure as hell beat trekking any further into the heart of darkness, but he’s got a long-standing date that he ain’t willing to break so he carries on until he sees the light.

He moves towards it until he can make out the source, it’s a lantern hanging in the window of the cabin. Sawyer smiles to himself as he climbs the steps and pushes the door open without knocking.

“Hey Doc, did you miss me?”

Jack pushes himself from his chair and grins.

“Not too much.”

Sawyer snorts as he pulls Jack in for a hug.

“Yeah, I bet.”

***

Sawyer sits on a dusty table and watches as Jack takes a long drink of whiskey. If it burns, the Doc don’t show it. He passes the bottle to Sawyer and returns to rocking.

“How have you been?” Jack asks.

“Just peachy, Doc,” Sawyer replies. It’s not true.

“And the others?”

“Aaron’s started school, he gives his mama hell but I don’t think she minds. Kate’s keeping busy, can’t make her stand still for nothing, last I heard she was out climbing mountains. Miles…he’s still Miles. They’re good. Happy.”

Jack nods, and Sawyer can’t help but think he looks content. He hopes it not just a trick of the light.

“What about you, Jack? How have you been?”

“I haven’t been.

It’s becoming an old joke.

“Still…” Sawyer trails off.

Jack ignores him and stands up, crosses the short distance between them until he’s leaning against the table next to Sawyer.

“I’ve been here, Sawyer.”

Sawyer stares at his hands.

“I know.”

***

The room seems impossibly small as Jack pushes Sawyer roughly against a wall and he finds his hips rubbing painfully against the windowsill. It doesn’t matter. The pain is part of it, almost as welcome as the rest. Jack’s real and here and that don’t happen nearly often enough.

“Son of a bitch,” Sawyer groans as Jack’s teeth graze his neck. He pulls Jack upwards and kisses him, enjoying how familiar the taste is on his tongue.

Sawyer moves them to the floor, ignoring the way the wind whistling through the cracks sounds like whispers. Jack’s on top of him in moments.

“Always got to be in charge,” Sawyer mutters.

Jack chuckles innocently as he works his hand into Sawyer’s pants.

After it’s over, they curl around each other on the floor. Sawyer watches the way Jack keeps his eyes on the window. Outside the sky is beginning to lighten; the night is passing. Sawyer snuggles closer.

“Don’t worry, Doc.”

“I’m not.”

The thought of Jack trapped in this place all alone for another year is too much. For the first time since it happened, Sawyer’s glad. At least now, he can offer Jack some kind of comfort.

Sawyer sighs. “Ask me again.”

“What?”

“How I’ve been.”

“How have you been, Sawyer?”

“Last week, I walked into a convenient store in Wichita to buy a pack of cigarettes and I didn’t walk out again.”

Jack turns to face Sawyer.

“What are you saying?”

“I’m saying some asshole put a bullet in my chest when I tried to get between him and the poor girl working the counter. I’m saying you ain’t the only dead man here tonight.”

“Fuck,” Jack hisses.

“Yep.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Don’t know about you, Doc, but I look forward to us grappling like it’s our last night on earth. Thought it might dampen the mood if you knew you were getting a roommate.”

Jack closes his eyes.

“You can’t stay here.”

Sawyer tries not to look hurt.

“Well gee; tell me how you really feel.”

Jack presses a kiss to Sawyer’s forehead.

“I want you too, but you can’t. You’ll have to move on.”

“Who says?”

“There are rules.”

“I ain’t going nowhere, Jack,” Sawyer whispers in Jack’s ear.

***

They stand side by side at the window and watch the sun come up as the last of the lamp’s flame dies. Sawyer shivers as it goes out. He’s never been allowed to stay this long before.

Jack turns to Sawyer and kisses him roughly, his hand tangled in Sawyer’s shirt holding him close.

“I won’t see you again,” Jack says. “Not for a long time.”

“I told you, I ain’t leaving…”

Jack smiles sadly.

“You’re already gone.”

Around him, the cabin shimmers and fades, disappearing back into nothing. Sawyer falls to the ground as his knees give way.

“Jack!” he screams.

***

He wakes up in an airport. His mind feels groggy, his eyelids heavy as he hears the last call for passengers of Flight 815 to make their way to the boarding gate.
