"How About You Put Your Mangos Where Your Mouth Is?"
In the past couple of years, Lost has become a big picture kind of show. It moves faster now, the plotting is tighter, and there’s a real sense of urgency in nearly every episode. And I don’t have a problem with that, in many ways I think it makes the series better. Jacob knows, I don’t miss sub-plots about missing wedding rings and Sawyer squishing harmless tree frogs.
But at the same time that meandering in the early seasons gave us some wonderful little character moments. Were they terribly important in the grand scheme of things? Not really, but they added a sense of warmth and humanity to the show that set it apart from pretty much every other show on television. And they were certainly entertaining to watch. Here’s sixteen of my favorite moments (mostly from s1-3, but a few from the later seasons snuck in there too). I warn you some of these suckers are mighty random. Clips included when I could find them…apparently Youtube users don’t share my love for b-plots and throwaway scenes.
16 Completely Inconsequential Lost Scenes That Make Me Ridiculously Happy
1. Sayid walks in on Hurley & Charlie listening to emo music in the hatch.
First of all, the idea of Charlie and Hurley hanging out listening to records and sharing their girl troubles just puts a big goofy grin on my face. Add Sayid wandering by and saying things like “This music is quite depressing” and you have a recipe for awesomeness. Plus there’s a Geronimo Jackson reference.
*relevant bit starts at 1:46.
2. Boone gives Jack a bunch of pens.
This scene kills me every time. Jack looks so exhausted leaning against the wreckage and then there’s Boone with a handful of pens. He’s so earnest and determined to help, and Jack just takes them from him and does this really low laugh thing. Beautiful.
3. Mango poker.
I’m not sure which part I like the best, the part where Kate threatens to break out a ruler or the part where Jack totally kicks Sawyer’s ass in poker. I much prefer watching Sawyer and Jack playing (reasonably) nice with each other to their usual posturing. They’re such boys here. It’s so much fun.
4. Hurley hands out food to the camp in a gratuitous slow-mo montage.
There’s Hurley giving Charlie peanut butter and Shannon feeding Vincent and Kate and Jack being adorable. Hell even Locke looks happy. It’s all sweet and lovely and completely unnecessary in the grand scheme of things, but welcome none the less.
*Starts at 3:50.
5. Juliet takes a sip of Miles’s coffee.
And I just lost everyone except for phelipa. It’s one of those blink and you’ll miss it moments, but Juliet casually takes his cup off the table and takes a sip and no one comments on it. I love the level of familiarity that it suggests; it’s such a friend type thing to do. We may not have seen those three years but little moments like this makes we wish like hell that we had.
*This is an extended version of the scene with a few deleted lines, hence the blue screens.
6. Jin tells a ghost story in Korean. Scares the crap out of everybody.
Personally, I think it was Jin’s expert use of the flashlight that made Hurley scream like a little girl.
7. Charlie fakes out Ana.
I love this scene to pieces. Ana spots Charlie’s gun during the trek out to the balloon and tells him to give it to someone who knows how to use it. Charlie starts to hand it to her, but at the last second turns and gives it to Sayid instead. And then he smirks. Reason #678 why Charlie Pace owns my heart.
8. Seth Norris and Claire have a pre-flight talk.
This scene is so inconsequential it never made it into the episode. But never mind that because it is epic. I’ve been quietly shipping these two ever since I saw this deleated scene. It’s Grunburg being adorable and trying to calm down a jittery Claire. What’s not to love?
BTW:
toestastegood totally wrote them over at the fic battle and it is amazing. Go check it out, I can wait.
9. Hurley is rewriting Star Wars. Miles thinks he’s nuts.
"Some Like it Hoth" was like a detour into old school Lost territory. It wasn’t an OMG Mythology! Episode, it was just Miles riding around in a van with Hurley discussing daddy issues and Star Wars. This scene in particular is both funny and poignant and makes me wish every episode included at least one Miles and Hurley buddy moment to counteract all of the epic angst.
10. Sayid’s Macgyver montage.
Hey remember when Sayid made Sawyer a pair of slightly ridiculous glasses? Good times.
11. Kate stops escaping long enough to take a bite out of an Apollo bar.
I think it’s the look on her face that really made this scene stick with me. It’s just pure bliss. And really I can’t blame her, if I hadn’t had any real food in a month I would totally spazz out if I found chocolate. Even if I was supposed to be escaping an attractive, but possibly crazy Scotsman.
12. Ghost Ana pulls over Hurley.
I still haven’t figured out why they brought Ana back to tell Hurley to drive carefully (although I appreciated the in-joke), but I’m not going to argue with them. It was such a funny, unexpected little scene. I was thrilled to see her back and the “Libby says hi” was a nice touch.
13. Island golfing.
Alright you guys. You know the moment when Jack and Michael are talking all seriously and the camera is super-tight so it feels like they’re discussing very important business and then we pan out and they’re just playing golf? That is some classic David Fury right there. Is it wrong that I’m still bitter that he left Lost? I should probably be over that by now.
14. “I gave you aspirin for the heroin withdrawals.”
Yeah, I know: random. But for some reason Jack’s response to Charlie’s tirade makes me giggle every time I watch it.
15. Locke eats an orange. Manages to make that seem seriously creepy.
There really wasn’t any reason for Locke to smile at Kate with an orange peel in his mouth. But he did. And it was creepy. And cool. But you know, mostly creepy.
16. Sayid fixes the radio and listens to “Moonlight Serenade” with Hurley.
In retrospect this scene is probably not as inconsequential as it seemed at the time (time-traveling radio station, FTW), but it’s still a small little character moment that doesn’t really have anything to do with the big picture but in many ways it encapsulates everything I love about Lost in one tidy little package.
It’s Hurley comforting Sayid, and Sayid dealing with his grief and they still manage to slip a bit of weirdness in there for good measure. Plus it’s just beautifully shot. Classic Lost at its finest.

Ghost Ana! That was such a pleasant surprise. It made me realize how much I miss having Michelle Rodriguez on the show.

YES!!!
Hahaha, your comment is funny because I was rewatching this ep with my sister and went, "Wait for it, LOOK - she takes his coffee!". She just gave me a weird look and went, "So!?"
I Think it's cute ;)
And the Star Wars scene - TOO funny!

That's exactly why I love you. You appreciate awesome randomness like casual coffee cup sipping. ;)
I still maintain that scene is absolutely adorable. They're too cute for their own good.

Your #1 is pretty much my favorite thing. Naveen Andrews had the BEST delivery. GOD, I loved the hatch. And Sayid making glasses = love. And Charlie with Ana Lucia and Sayid is so great. I've watched that Youtube bit a bunch.
The only one I love that isn't here is that scene where Hurley makes Sawyer give Claire some blankets, and Sawyer's like, "Your baby is less wrinkly than he was a couple of weeks ago." And Claire is like, "?????"
Ohhhhh. Love this post. :)

I swear I could watch Charlie, Hurley, and Sayid sitting around the hatch listening to music forever. It's like the best thing ever. :D

I can't tell you how hard I agree with this!!! I love the bemused look on Sayid's face as he wanders in, too.
HAHA CHARLIE FAKING OUT ANA WAS GOLD. And Jin's ghost story. And Sayid fashioning a pair of glasses for Sawyer, no big. Gah. ♥
And I can't even begin to express my love for Jack and Sawyer's poker game.

The Poker Game! I've never shipped Jack/Sawyer, but scenes like that totally make me see the appeal.

One of my favourite Lost moments ever! I also love Ghost!Ana.

Another thing that should be on this list is the scene in 4x11, where Hurley and Ben share the chocolate bar. So funny.
