I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas! Mine was good. (She says vaguely.) We had a small one this year, but there was lots of awesome food and plenty of family time. I’ll post about all that later though because right now, I’m knee-deep in yuletide fics. There’s so many amazing fics this year, I feel like taking a hiatus from real life and just sitting here and reading them all while I eat those delicious Snickers Nutcracker Men “Santa” left in my stocking. That would be bad, right?
I have recs! (I’m sure there will be (lots) more later. I still have a ton of HoHoHo fics to read too…)
Locking up the Sun (Fiona/Carey, So Weird)
Then he realizes: it's the same symbol from the book. Confused, he starts to ask, but she stops him with a knowing glance over her shoulder.
"It... binds the soul to the flesh." Sucking a painful breath, she continues, "I won't be like my father, Carey. They took his soul first. If they want mine... if anything out there wants mine... they'll have to rip it from me."
This is the fic that was written for me and it is EPIC. And PERFECT. I don't know who wrote it, but I love them dearly. I don't think anyone on my flist is a closet SW fan, but I highly recommend reading this anyway. Trust me, if you're familiar with SPN, you know all you need to know about SW---it's basically SPN with a teenage girl, but she's all grown up and (even more) badass here. Seriously, I feel like I've been waiting at least a decade for someone to write this fic. I never imagined it would be this good though. <3
Snapshots (OT3, Being Human)
After that, the notebook was always around. It wasn't that they talked less, but that there were things no one wanted to say.
OMG. THIS FIC. I couldn't even leave a coherent comment last night because I was too busy flailing and crying. Trust me, if you're a fan of Annie/George/Mitchell you are doing yourself a disservice by not reading this fic.
At Least There’s Colin Firth (George, Being Human)
"You want to tear someone's head off, you crave certain types of food, and... well, I suppose it's sort of like bloating," Annie had said, the DVD settled in her hands. She kept glancing down at it dreamily at odd times, and George had been convinced that she was imagining what it'd be like to marry Colin Firth.
George thinking about Annie post s2. Sweet, funny, and sad all at once with bonus Colin Firth references.
Go Straight||Go Left (Britt, Terriers)
Post-series fic told entirely in letters Britt writes to his baby girl. This fic packs a hell of a punch. (Warning: Major character death.)
Shooting Stars, Satellites, and Other Flaming Wreckage That Falls Out of the Sky (Liz/Pete, 30 Rock)
While she ate lunch at her desk, Liz made a pros and cons list.
At the top, under pros, she wrote, "He's Pete."
Then, under cons, she wrote, "HE'S PETE."
I've always had a soft spot for Liz/Pete and this fic nailed their dynamic with hilarious, surprisingly touching results.
The Three Stages of The Aeneid (Ensemble,Black Books)
He lifted his head and wailed, "They killed Cedric!"
Fran covered her mouth. "Who's that?"
"I don't even know! But he's dead and it's sad!"
Bernard reads Harry Potter. Do I even need to use more words?
History of Film (Community, slight Abed/Troy)
"Wait, what?" Britta swings around to glare at Jeff. "You mean you're playing along with this?"
"All it actually requires is that I look hot in a fedora and occasionally say intensely dramatic things," Jeff points out. "That's me, but in a fedora."
"Yeah, I kind of just wanted the hat," Troy says, walking in behind Jeff and pointing up at his own fedora.
The gang take on a variety of film genres, each one more more awesome/hilarious than the last. There's even a bit of Abed/Troy thrown in for good measure.
On a Steel Horse I Ride (Annie/Troy/Abed, Community)
"Road trip," Abed says, nodding approvingly. (High five.) "One car. Seven people. A country's worth of dramatic situations ripe for both comedy and tragedy."
This fic is an OT3 masterpiece and I'm in serious awe of how easily the writer seemed to get into Troy's head. Amazingness from start to finish.
Beneath the Stars (Ali/Lawrence, Lawrence of Arabia)
In the daytime, Aurens blazed whiter than the sun as he burned a path across the sand. In the night, he shone under the moon like the brightest of heaven's stars.
A short, beautifully written Ali/Lawrence piece. (BTW, Lawrence of Arabia: Slashy movie or the slashiest movie?)
In a Jingle-Jangle Morning (Joker/Thief, “All Along the Watchtower”)
The secrets of the thief are the only ones she needn’t expose, just like he never steals what little she has: her tattered multicoloured dress, her armour against the world. With the bells jingle-jangling and the bright red and yellow catching all the gazes, she can speak truth to power. And power laughs, heartily.
I've never read song fic before, but I'm glad I made an exception for this one. The atmosphere the writer created out of the song is seriously impressive. Beautifully written, believable, and flawlessly executed.
