Five Acts

toestastegood is hosting a Five Acts comment fic-a-thon this week. Here’s the deal:

The image keeps him up that night. He had seen the pictures in print, saw Sirius's insane laugh, the glint of madness in his eyes - they were embellishments, journalism tools.

The Sirius he met after thirteen years needed no illusions. He was thin and frail and his laugh was so empty. There was little left showing of the man Remus once knew and loved. It was a ghost staring back at him, a cruel haunting reminder of what he gave up on. Remus would laugh if it weren't so very cruel.

Sirius was there and then he was gone again. Dumbledore sat perched on what was left of the bed in the Shrieking Shack and Remus paced the floor and tried to reason why he was alone again.

"I should have known." And Remus sighed. Dumbledore did not look him in the eyes, and for a second Remus was sure he was thinking of something entirely different.

"How would it have made a difference?" Dumbledore asked, finally looking at him and Remus felt something heavy settle and expand in his chest.

It was an idle question. They both knew it would have made one, even if they couldn't put into words what it would have been.

Remus tries to smile. He fails.

He shows up a year later.

Remus is making tea and getting ready to curl up with a good book when there's a loud bark at the front door. He tries not to think of how his heart skips a beat at the sound. He's at the door a second later, and instead of being disappointed by the sight of a leashed pet being led around the floor like he has so many times before, he comes face to face with what he's been searching for.

Sirius stays in canine form even after Remus has shut the door. He trots around the apartment - the same one they once called home.

Remus never moved - held tight to that home and all the memories it had because he never did believe they were all lies.

He nudges at the coffee table - the first piece of furniture they picked out together. He sniffs at the fireplace where Remus had first taught him about the Muggle wonder called S'mores. He whimpers by the couch where he first told Remus he loved him. He forgets that Remus is there or maybe he doesn't care. Remus can't be sure.

Remus turns to pour his tea and when he looks back Sirius has transfigured back into his human form and is sitting at the counter. Remus doesn't blink.

"Not much has changed," Sirius says quietly. He stares at the same counter-tops they christened the house on. His fingers trace the faint lines on the granite tiles with the same precision they used to trace the scares on Remus's torso.

Remus looks away and concedes. "You're right."

Sirius wrote one letter - one sentence - to Remus when he was arrested 13 years prior.

March 13th 1977

Remus did not know the day off hand. It took him weeks to figure out and by then Sirius was already carted off to Azkaban for good.

March 13th was two weeks after the Snape Incident. Sirius had taken Remus's face in his hands, forced him to look at him after two weeks of begging and pleading.

you can always trust me now. i've learned my lesson

Remus had nodded and Sirius covered his shock at being forgiven by sealing his lips over Remus's and they didn't speak of the trust again. It was always implied.

In hindsight, it was Remus who didn't learn his lesson.

They're sitting out on Remus's balcony watching the stars come up. Sirius nurses a shot of firewhiskey. He's finally gotten a shower and shave and a proper meal under his belt. In just a few hours, the weariness he carried with him has faded away and Remus feels content watching him relax, watching his eyes flutter shut.

Sirius must feel him staring because he cracks one eye open and studies Remus with it.

never had a home Sirius throws the words out there out of the blue and then trails off. It's not really a sentence.

Remus extends his hand, and with it a direct line to his heart. Sirius stares at it, and Remus is sure that it's too much, too soon, but then, Sirius's callus fingers are covering his and that soft smile that only Remus has seen appears.

Sirius laughs a little and it's not so hollow anymore. He pulls Remus's hand to his mouth, brushes his lips over Remus's knuckles.

Sirius finishes his thought. "Except when I was with you."

Remus wants to look away, but he remembers Sirius's courage all those years ago and stays strong. "I'm sorry."

Sirius squeezes his hand. "I forgive you."

And Remus can breath again.

This just reduced me to a flailing mess of fangirl. It's just so gorgeous and achy and vivid. I love the way you weaved each of the phases of their relationship, the letters they wrote that were only lines. You nailed everything I adore about this pairing: the trust issues, the guardedness, but also that connection, that sense of home they give to each other.

You're welcome, sweetie! As soon as I saw that you were a Remus/Sirius fan, I knew I had to give them a shot. And I'm beyond relieved to hear you liked it because I freak out a little every time I write HP fic. It's intimidating. But as long as you enjoyed it, I'm happy.
