Before we get started, here’s a roundup of my previous Lost lists. I’m trying to keep myself from repeating moments so if you see a big scene missing I’m not crazy, I probably just included it on another list. Unless I just didn’t like it. I have weird taste in scenes sometimes. As always, these lists are incredibly biased towards characters I love, I’m about as fair and balanced as Fox news, what can I say?
16 Times Lost Made My Heart Melt into a Puddle of Goo
15 “Holy Polar Bear, Batman! Did That Actually Just Happen?” Lost Moments
8 Criminally Underrated Episodes of Lost
16 Completely Inconsequential Lost Scenes That Make Me Ridiculously Happy
15 Times Juliet Burke Was Cooler Than You and Me and Everyone We Know

Originally, I planned to post one epic list of all of my favorite Lost moments. It was a good plan aside from the part where I fail at making choices. So rather than have things dissolve into a Sophie’s (Jacob’s?) Choice scenario I decided to devote each day of this week to a different season. I capped myself at 25 moments each…but I’m a dirty, rotten cheater when I have to be.
We begin with season one. The one Lost season that’s pretty much universally beloved. Before hatches, hippies, bombs, and morality detectors---Lost was just a kickass show about a bunch of people surviving on a vaguely weird island. It also had the distinction of looking like nothing else that had ever been on network television before.
I still have vivid memories of watching Jack wake up in the jungle for the first time. Television wasn’t supposed to be that cinematic, complicated, or aggressively bizarre---until Lost changed the rules. Now I’ll admit I’m not quite as nostalgic for the “good old days” as some Lost fans, but there’s no way around it, season one was one hell of an epic year of television.
Lots of clips/links under the cut.
My 25-ish Favorite Moments From Lost Season One.
1. The Walkabout Reveal.
The scene that had me pledging my undying devotion to this show. Still the most moving, jaw dropping twist they’ve ever produced.
2. The Raft Launching. AKA: The scene where we were all emotionally manipulated by a golden retriever.
There was hugging and hopefulness and a boy and his dog. How can you not tear up while watching this? *whimpers*
3. Sawyer tells Jack his dad loved him.
These guys have such a bizarre relationship, but this moment is so graceful and human. It was a perfect capper to the journey they’d been on all year.
"That's the thing about kids..."
4. “You guys, where are we?”
I don’t even need to explain this one. It’s just that iconic.
5. “Baby, I’m tied to a tree…”
Look, I was completely shipless until Des/Penny and Juliet/Sawyer came along, but even I have to admit that kiss was smoking hot. And Sawyer’s, “Baby, I’m tied to a tree in the jungle of mystery and I just got tortured by a spinal surgeon and a genuine Iraqi” is quite possibly the best Lost line ever.
6. Charlie’s confession.
I love this man beyond the telling and the fact that he told a priest he had a threesome only made me love him more. Oh, Charlie.
*scene starts at 2:36.
7. Jack wakes up in the jungle.
This is where it all began, with Jack Shephard flat on his back on the jungle floor. I can only hope the last image of the show will be as powerful as the first.
8. Claire and Locke’s dreams.
I have a thing for dream sequences and these two were so eerie and effective. I still get shivery thinking about them.
9. Red shirt lesson.
Poor, doomed Boone. Those writers certainly love their foreshadowing.
10. Sun is free./Hurley’s walkman finally dies.
The image of Sun dropping that towel and wading out into the ocean is one of my all time favorite shots. It’s so beautiful and symbolic. Hurley’s walkman dying was a nice touch and for me a welcome end to the slow-mo music montages. They were all beautiful, but Lost was too epic to indulge in that sort of gimmickry for long.
11. Boarding the plane.
This scene is so haunting. If only they had known all that was to come…they probably would have hung out in Sydney another day.
12. Michael shows Walt all of the letters he wrote to him.
The father/son relationship between Michael and Walt was originally one of my favorite aspects of the show. The scene where Michael shows Walt that he never stopped thinking about him just breaks my heart.
*Relevant bit starts at 6:34. Youtube users are apparently not big Michael fans; it took ages to find a clip of this scene.
13. The Whispers/Sayid fixes Danielle’s music box.
The moment Sayid fixes Danielle’s music box is a nice demonstration of his MacGyver skills and also a wonderful moment of connection for a woman who had been alone for far too long.
Sadly, I couldn’t find a clip, but please enjoy this super creepy scene of Sayid encountering the whispers instead. Man, “Solitary” was awesome, wasn’t it?
14. Kate and Tom dig up their time capsule.
This glimpse into Kate’s childhood explained so much about her character and I must admit I have a huge soft spot for Tom.
15. Crossing the bridge of doom/Hurley hugs Danielle.
"Numbers" is one of my all time favorite eps. And youtube has no clips. Stupid youtube. Seriously though, remember the boys crossing the bridge? So. Freaking. Much. Fun.
16. Boone and Shannon have sex.
These two were so dysfunctional. I must admit that this scene is included mostly for the way it was shot. The lighting is beautiful and the way they kept Boone in darkness when Shannon flips on the lamp was genius.
17. “I Never…”/Sawyer shoots Duckett.
“Outlaws” as penned by Ultimate Drew Goddard is pretty much my favorite Sawyer episode. The “I Never” scene was a creative way to get those two crazy kids talking and the Duckett scene is…well, perfect. Dark, angsty, beautifully acted, and very, very blue.
I Never
18. The hatch light comes on.
Be honest, you thought it might be a spaceship, right? That was just me then? Fine, blame an early exposure to The X-Files.
19. Arzt goes boom/First glimpse of the Black rock.
There was a ship in the jungle! And the annoying science teacher blew up! This scene appeals to my inner twelve year old who also happens to have a morbid sense of humor.
20. Boone dies.
This scene was/is brutal to watch. Boone telling Jack he’ll let him off the hook gets me every single time.
21. Jack won’t stay down/Ghost Christian.
Is it any less cool to see Jack chase Christian into the jungle now the we know who he really was? I didn’t think so. Also, baby Jack is too adorable for words. He was always a hero.
22. Kate robs a bank.
I have no reason for this beyond the awesomeness of Kate Austen: Bank robber. Season one Kate was such a badass.
23. “Gemini’s.”
Aww, Claire! So cute. And seriously, where were all of the hairbrushes?
24. Jack saves Charlie.
I waffled back and forth on including this one. It’s certainly a brilliant moment, but it was also incredibly traumatic to watch. I’m just glad Jack’s so stubborn.
25. Man of Science, Man of Faith.
Maybe the best philosophical discussion on the show and in retrospect it pretty much laid the groundwork for everything that was to come. My only quibble: I was really pulling for science to win this debate but even Jack’s a destiny guy now.
Bonus: Imaginary Peanut Butter because I don’t care if I’ve already talked about it, it’s classic and Hurley sings to Aaron…just cause.

I agree. I'm no Skate shipper but that line was HAWT. Oh season one, how I've I miss you. Sidenote: Can you believe how many of the S1 people are dead? *sobs*

Man, I know. It's crazy. This show's death rate is insane.

“Baby, I’m tied to a tree in the jungle of mystery and I just got tortured by a spinal surgeon and a genuine Iraqi” is quite possibly the best Lost line ever."
So my little secret is that a lot of the reasons I ship Skate together are the same reasons I ship Buffy and Angel. They own their scenes together; they come together like magnets for these little moments of epic. The writing seduced me. They have this moment, the "I don't wanna be Eve" moment, the letter reading scene in 1x08, the moment where Kate's trying to get information from Miles so Sawyer distracts Locke for her. I look forward to seeing how they're going to play a scene together. And that line there sums it up pretty well :)
When I watch Charlie check if Aaron's made any deposits I always notice how he doesn't really breathe after and I'm convinced he actually did and Dom couldn't actually breathe :p Ah, Hurley's singing and Sawyer's snark ;)

I almost shipped S/K in season one. I certainly enjoyed watching them together that year more so than I did in any of the other seasons. They really do have this palpable chemistry and that scene in particular illustrated the connection between them
It's weird, but I think all of my ships are pretty much the same ship. I like that combination of a calm character with a wild one (Remus -> Sirius, Scully -> Mulder, Juliet -> Sawyer). I'm alarmingly predictable with my shipping preferences.
Heh. I've never noticed his expression before. Poor Dom.

Claire's dream is so fabulously creepy, and awww man, the Walkabout scene! That is one of my very favorite scenes in all fiction ever. The hatch light is great too. Terry and Giachinno sure know how to tug at my heartstrings. I can't see either scene without getting all teary.

ITA about the "Walkabout" scene. It's incredible.

Vincent swimming out to the raft always gets me! So does Sun and Jin's lingering gaze and the raft floats away.
I agree that Shannon/Boone sex scene was staged so well.
The Walkabout reveal and Charlie's hanging were the major OMG moments.
Locker's Theresa goes up and down the stairs was so creepy!

The raft scene gets me every single time. They're all so hopeful, it's a beautiful moment.

That Sun moment my be favorite single moment in the show. It's just gorgeous.

AGREED!!!
The In Translation montage, Charlie getting Sawyer to read to the baby, and Sawyer telling Jack about meeting his dad are my favorite moments
plus every minute of Shayid. This list was so wonderful. I'm getting teary.I wish Kate's crime had JUST been bank-robbing. Like I wish she was not ridden with daddy and mommy issues, but instead was just this awesome, gun-toting bank robber who was interested in cash, not toy planes. I think that's where they took a wrong turn with her character. Because that episode was really awesome until it turned out to be about a plane.

I didn't mind the plane so much (I'm a Tom fan), but ITA about wishing she was just a hard-core bank robber type. That would have been awesome, and it kills me because she was so amazing in s1. I still love her, but there was this real sense that she was manipulating the hell out of folks that first year and I miss that. I liked her better when she was kind of shifty and ambiguous I guess.
