A/N: For [ profile] crickets who requested Elena/Tyler, smack dab in the middle of a dirty lie. Merry Christmas, dear! Sorry about the lateness. <3

When she was seventeen, growing up seemed like an impossibility. Elena knew deep down she would die long before she ever saw her eighteenth birthday. That was an inevitability.

She’s twenty-seven now. Grown and alive and lying sprawled across Tyler’s chest. This is not where she imagined ending up.

They don’t say I love you. It’s an unspoken rule between them. They don’t say a lot of things.

Instead they kiss and touch, his fingers tracing the old scars on her neck, marks he didn’t leave, hers always find the nape of his neck and trail down the slope of his spine. They fuck, slowly and deliberately until one of them starts to break, starts to beg, starts to choke out the other one’s name.

It’s not love, this thing between them.

“You want to get something to eat?” he asks.

You don’t need to eat, she wants to say.

But that would sound cruel. It might cut him and she doesn’t want to see his face fall. She prefers to see him smile.

“What’s the matter, did I wear you out?” she says instead.

He smirks, runs his hand through her hair.

“You wish, Gilbert.”

It’s not love. It’s familiar.

When she scrunches her brow she can see the faint beginnings of wrinkles. They’re not quite there yet, won’t be for a few more years. They’re coming though. Tyler is still eighteen. He’ll always be eighteen.

She can’t stay here forever.

He was the first boy she ever kissed.

“You weren’t my first,” he confides.

“You never told me that.”

“It was Bonnie, she kissed me at Cindy Dixon’s pool party. I slipped her a little tongue and she shoved me in the pool.”

Elena leans into him and laughs, burying her face against the cool skin of his neck. He always smells so clean. She likes that.

“Served you right.”

She packs and unpacks her bags a dozen times.

Tyler knows. He never says a word, but he knows.

He’ll let her go without a fight when the time comes. They’ve both been in love stories before, that’s how they know this isn’t one.

“I’m going to take a shower, you wanna keep me company?”

His face is smeared with blood. Elena smiles.

“Sure,” she says.
